Protecting Baby: The Toxic 5

As a mother, there is nothing more important to us than our children’s health and well-being. This is why it is highly important that we are educated consumers. Sadly, there are some scary and concerning ingredients that are being used in our children’s everyday products. This should be cause for public outcry. We need stricter oversight of these products before they ever make it to shelves. We are going to examine five toxic ingredients that should be avoided at all costs.

Formaldehyde - This one sounds so gross it’s hard to believe that it is actually included in some baby products. Formaldehyde helps stop the growth of mold and can be found as a preservative in water-based products. What comes next is what should have you running for the hills. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, which can cause a litany of health problems, ranging from mild to severe.

It’s also worth noting that it is equally important to avoid all the following chemicals, as they contain formaldehyde-releasing ingredients. Quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, Diazolidinyl Urea, polyoxymethylene urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1, 3-diol and glyoxal.

1,4-Dioxade - This product should have the word danger written all over it. The fact that it is in children’s products is more than concerning. 1,4-Dioxade is a by-product (not an actual ingredient) of a cheap manufacturing process called ethoxylation. So, buyer beware and be sure to be on the look-out for this toxic carcinogen. It is also a kidney toxicant, neurotoxin and known respiratory toxin. Unbelievable.

Pro Tip: Since you will not find 1,4-Dioxade on labels look for ingredients that contain the letters eth, as these may be an indicator that the product is present.

Phthalates - These preservatives are endocrine disruptors and can cause asthma, cancer and allergies. They are found in products such as shampoos and lotions.

Parabens - Parabens are yet another preservative that is a known endocrine disruptor. These disruptors can cause developmental disorders, cancer and skin irritation.

Fragrance – The word fragrance listed in any set of ingredients should be a red flag for adults and children alike. Fragrance is a word that can cover a multitude of other ingredients and the worst part is that companies using the term “fragrance” do not have to disclose what exactly the make up of the term really is.

Alarm bells should be going off. It's the snake in the grass, one of the huge loopholes in the regulation industry. Depending on what is used to make up the “fragrance” it can be linked to ingredients that cause neurological problems, respiratory and eye damage. Not exactly minor occurrences. These are some serious consequences. Anything with the word fragrance listed on the label we suggest avoiding at all costs.

To wrap things up, the message we feel is quite simple. The more you know, the more empowered you will be. Equip yourself with the facts. You have the potential to save your family from avoidable heartache and regret.

Other toxins to avoid:

Sodium Laureth sulfate - Sodium Laureth sulfate can be contaminated with the dangerous 1,4-dioxane, which has been linked to cancer.

Tributyl-tin (TBT) - TBT is linked with hormone disruption and can be found in some diapers.
